Karl Goehring will not return to UND as an assistant coach

Mar. 31—GRAND FORKS — UND assistant coach Karl Goehring will not return next season under new head coach Dane Jackson.

Goehring has been with the program since the 2019-20 season, when he was hired to replace Matt Shaw.

"My time as an assistant hockey coach at the University of North Dakota has come to an end," Goehring wrote on Twitter/X. "While this isn't how I envisioned my time here concluding, I am incredibly grateful for the past six years.

"Thank you to coach Brad Berry for giving me the opportunity to be part of this program. To the players — thank you for your hard work, dedication, and for allowing me to be part of your journey both on and off the ice. Coaching you has been an honor."

Goehring, a national championship-winning goaltender from 2000, worked with UND's goalies and ran the team's power play.

For the last four seasons, UND has gone to the transfer portal for its starting goalie — Zach Driscoll, Drew DeRidder, Ludvig Persson and T.J. Semptimphelter. Driscoll and Persson were second-team all-National Collegiate Hockey Conference picks.

UND's last recruited goaltender to start the majority of games was Adam Scheel in 2020-21.

UND's power play has been a strength recently, finishing fifth, ninth and second nationally the last three seasons.

Prior to UND, Goehring spent two years with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization and the top minor-league affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. He worked as Syracuse's goaltending and video coach.

Goehring also was a volunteer assistant at UND from 2010-17.

Goaltender Zane McIntyre won the Mike Richter Award in 2015 as the nation's top netminder.

Goehring played at UND from 1997-01, setting numerous program records.

He led UND to the 2000 NCAA national championship and to the 2001 NCAA Frozen Four.

Goehring played eight seasons of pro hockey and dressed in an NHL game with the Nashville Predators.

"Thank you to my family for your unwavering support through every step of this journey," Goehring said. "This chapter may be closing, but I look forward to what's ahead. Until we meet again..."
