John Terry criticises Enzo Maresca’s choices/tactics for the second time this week
Chelsea legend John Terry has once again been questioning the choices/tactics of Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca.
The news comes after Chelsea were defeated by Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, losing to a first half headed goal by Mikel Merino.
EXCLUSIVE! Results of Cole Palmer’s injury scan have come back, and there’s good and bad news!
The game was obviously not without its drama and Chelsea fans saw what they expect to see every time Robert Sanchez starts, and that is him making a silly mistake and giving away a goal. This time he got lucky, but Maresca continued to back his goalkeeper at the full time whistle once again.
Meanwhile, Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber was seen mocking Maresca on the side lines in an interaction that has annoyed Blues fans even more.
All in all it wasn’t a good performance from Chelsea and it lacked intensity, desire, energy, and any kind of real belief that they could get something from the game.
We are now into an international break and a chance for Chelsea’s players and Maresca to have a bit of a reset before our next game against Tottenham!
Terry questions Maresca again
Earlier today, we ran a story of John Terry indirectly criticising Maresca’s tactics in an interview earlier this week.
Well, in fresh quotes from the same interview, it looks like Terry has also been criticising Maresca’s use of Reece James in midfield, agreeing with Thomas Tuchel saying he is a defender and not a midfielder.
Tuchel said “I still feel he is a player for the full-back and wing-back positions” this week after naming James in his first England squad.
When asked about James’ position, Terry, who was also a homegrown captain at Stamford Bridge, said: “I agree with that [Tuchel’s assessment]. I see him as a defender.
“I don’t like it, to be honest, people drifting in [to midfielder] I think it is more confusing.
“Midfielders are very comfortable with their back to goal. When defenders step into those roles it is probably the opposite, we are probably not as comfortable receiving the ball with our back to goal.
“A very different role and first and foremost, talking about the 2005-06 season, we conceded 15 goals and top teams are built around good foundations and I think you need that.
“To be able to do that, you need a back four or a solid back three in place.”
