Jayden Daniels has Commanders set at QB: What about the New York Giants' search?
Will a top-tier quarterback be coming to the Commanders division (NFC East) in the 2025 NFL draft?
The Commanders certainly don't think they need to draft a quarterback this season, and isn't the fan base excited about that fact? Washington has had more than enough quarterbacks in the last 30 seasons who did not work out well. Heath Shuler (1994), Patrick Ramsey (2002), Jason Campbell (2005), Robert Griffin (2012), and Dwayne Haskins (2019) were all first-round draft choices that did not work out well for Washington.
The New York Giants have the third selection in this year's draft, but as they may have shown last week, they are not sure they will be able to get one of the two top quarterbacks in this draft.
The Giants went out last week and signed veteran Jameis Winston. Winston was actually the first overall selection in the 2015 NFL draft. Incidentally, the No. 2 overall selection in that 2015 NFL draft is now a Washington Commander. Marcus Mariota (QB -Oregon) was selected after Winston that year.
New York got rid of Daniel Jones, releasing him during the 2024 season. Only Tommy DeVito returns in 2025, so Winston may be the Giants' starting quarterback if no one else is added. Winston, you recall, can be very good at times. Then, before that game has concluded, he can be just as bad.
In 2019, Winston passed for 5,000 yards. However, he also became the first quarterback to pass for 30 touchdowns (33) and 30 interceptions. Tom Brady, ready to leave the Patriots, likely said to himself, "That's a good offense if Jameis Winston can pass for 30 touchdowns. And I KNOW I am not going to throw 30 interceptions!" Brady was right; the Bucs did have a good set of receivers. He came in, Rob Gronkowski also came in, the Bucs had a tremendous pass rush, and most in the media gave Brady all the credit.
The Giants want and need a young quarterback they can build around for their future. Cam Ward is expected to go No. 1 overall to the Titans, as Tennessee already appears to have given up on Will Levis.
Secondly, will the Browns draft a quarterback now and give up on Deshaun Watson? Many analysts now believe the Browns will pick the best player available, and those analysts believe that player to be Penn State's (Edge) Abdul Carter. If the Browns go for Carter, that would leave the Giants the opportunity to draft QB Shedeur Sanders (Colorado).
The Giants last went with a quarterback in the first round in 2019. That was Daniel Jones, which didn't work out so well. The last time before 2019? No, it was not Eli Manning. It was actually Philip Rivers in 2004, who was then traded to the Chargers for Eli Manning.
Commanders fans, aren't you glad Adam Peters chose Jayden Daniels last year with the second overall selection?
