Ja'Marr Chase contract was massively impacted by Myles Garrett, Browns
Cincinnati Bengals wideout Ja'Marr Chase was more than happy to admit during Tuesday's press conference that the Myles Garrett-Cleveland Browns deal had a big impact on his own.
Now, ESPN's Adam Schefter has followed up with reporting confirming that idea is true.
According to Schefter, the Bengals had a deal in place with Chase "at about $37, $38 million per year, about a week or two earlier" before the Garrett deal in Cleveland went down.
Schefter said that forced the two sides to go back to the table:
"And the Bengals already had said that they would make Ja'Marr Chase the highest-paid non-quarterback in football history, so even though they had the makings of a deal between 37 and 38, they had to go back to the table and update it after Myles Garrett's deal.
"So the Browns' deal with Garrett cost the Bengals on their deal with Ja'Marr Chase at a later date."
Not that a few million per year is that big of a deal to the Bengals, all things considered. But Duke Tobin had made those comments about Chase being the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league publicly. And even if he hadn't, Chase's reps probably would've forced the Bengals back to the table anyway after Garrett's deal.
What's interesting is that we now know Chase's deal was tied to Higgins getting one too. Garrett clearly might've held that up too, which could, in turn, explain why the Bengals didn't have these done before free agency opened.
