Jaguars way too early 53-man roster prediction after first wave of NFL free agency
Let's take a way-too-early look ahead to what the Jacksonville Jaguars' 53-man roster could look like for the 2025 season following the first wave of NFL free agency.
Now, of course, there is plenty of roster-shaping to take place. We could see some small free agent moves still made, and the Jaguars do have a league-high 10 selections in this year's NFL draft. So not only will there still be roster turnover coming, but the Jaguars have the ability to add several impact players to the team as well.
But after the first week of free agency, we've already seen GM James Gladstone really begin reshaping this roster. Before free agency started, he released four players and traded Christian Kirk. Then, once negotiating could begin, Gladstone added nine free agents to the Jaguars roster.
Gladstone has said that he wants to build the roster through the draft, first and foremost, but after a four-win season in 2024, free agency was a tool to help raise the floor of the current roster.
Jaguars free-agent signings
- WR Dyami Brown
- T/G Chuma Edoga
- C Robert Hainsey
- CB Jourdan Lewis
- RG Patrick Mekari
- QB Nick Mullens
- TE Johnny Mundt
- S Eric Murray
- TE Hunter Long
So here is the framework for how the Jaguars' final rosterĀ could shake out, given what we know right now:
Quarterback (2): Trevor Lawrence, Nick Mullens
Some teams will keep three quarterbacks, but for what it's worth, the Rams rostered just two on last year's initial 53-man roster.
Running back (3): Travis Etienne, Tank Bigsby, Keilan Robinson
This is a position that the Jaguars will add to in the draft. Depth is needed, and this year's class has a ton of talent.
Wide receiver (6): Gabe Davis, Dyami Brown, Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, Draft pick, Draft pick
This is a room that still needs some reshaping, even after signing Brown. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Jaguars select two wide receivers in this year's draft.
Tight end (4): Johnny Mundt, Hunter Long, Brenton Strange, Draft pick
There are three positions in the 2025 NFL draft known for their depth and tight end is one of them. So I would guess Gladstone continues to add to this room to round out the depth chart.
Offensive line (10): Walker Little, Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainsey, Patrick Mekari, Anton Harrison, Chuma Edoga, Cole Van Lanen, Javon Foster, Luke Fortner, Draft pick
The offensive line has been an emphasis for Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen. So I think they continue to add here and go heavy by keeping 10 on the roster to give themselves options.
Defensive line (9): Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker, Myles Coles, Arik Armstead, Maason Smith, Davon Hamilton, Draft pick, Draft pick, Jordan Jefferson
Gladstone said at the NFL combine that this would be one of the position groups he prioritizes. An addition hasn't happened yet, but the draft will provide the Jaguars with plenty of prospects who can come in and make an impact right away.
Linebacker (5): Devin Lloyd, Foyesade Oluokun, Chad Muma, Ventrell Miller, Yasir Abdullah
Depth is still needed at this position, so a draft pick could end up making their way onto the final roster here.
Cornerback (6): Tyson Campbell, Jourdan Lewis, Jarrian Jones, Montaric Brown, Deantre Prince, Draft pick
It sounds like Jones will get the opportunity to start on the boundary with Lewis in the slot, but competition should still be brought in rather than assuming he can make that transition.
Safety (5): Eric Murray, Darnell Savage, Antonio Johnson, Andrew Wingard, Draft pick
Similar to the rest of the roster, the free agent signing of Murray provided stability here, but depth and competition still is needed.
Special teams (3): Logan Cooke, Ross Matiscik, Cam Little
