LONDON — Darren McWhorter’s North Laurel Jaguars needed a win on Thursday, and got it against defending 13th Region champion Corbin.
With numerous Major League Baseball scouts in attendance watching the Redhounds’ Kade Elam, McWhorter worried his team might press against Corbin (7-6).
They showed no signs of nerves, scoring six runs in the first inning and never looking back.
Led by Cameron Smith’s home run, two-RBI effort, North Laurel (6-7) quickly scored six runs during its 9-4 win.
“It was a good win, we needed it,” McWhorter said. “Had about 20 Major League scouts at the game watching Kade Elam. Sometimes kids will try and do too much and not play well but that didn't happen. We had lots of energy and played well.
“Cooper Parman pitched well and got the win and was 2 for 3 at the plate,” he added. “We had lots of players step up with big hits but, none bigger than Cam Smith’s home run. We turn around tomorrow and play Perry Central at Perry, and at North Laurel Saturday. I hope we bring the same energy we had tonight. Great Day to be a Jag.”
Cooper Parman finished with two hits and two RBI, and also got the win, allowing six hits and three earned runs. He finished with four strikeouts.
Carter Kelley finished with two hits and two runs scored while Cooper Elza and Jude McWhorter had a hit, a run scored, and an RBI.
Cam Hinkle finished with a hit, two RBI, and a run scored while Brayden Evans had a hit, and Ashton Napier scored a run.
Elam led Corbin with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored while Cam Estep had a hit and scored twice.
Noah Cima finished with a hit while Kaiden Freeman delivered a home run, an RBI, and a run scored.
Lucas Tarvin also added a hit.
