Jaguars GM James Gladstone on what free agent WR Dyami Brown adds to offense
Following the Jacksonville Jaguars' initial free agency moves, which included nine additions, GM James Gladstone spoke about what wide receiver Dyami Brown can add to the passing game.
"What he provides just on a vertical plane and in run-after-catch scenarios, it's something that is extremely exciting, extremely alluring for our offensive staff, and I think that he'll be able to take another step to expand his game, and we'll see him come to life in the same ways that he did towards the end of the season with Washington this last season, right off the bat, well, also expanding his role to fit what we're intending on doing this coming season," Gladstone said last Thursday.
Skill-set-wise, having a vertical presence can do wonders for an offense. When defenses respect the downfield ability that a player brings, it can help open up opportunities in the passing game elsewhere, particularly over the middle and on underneath routes. There is even some upside for the run game as well, with fewer defenders near the line of scrimmage.
Brown's ability to pick up YAC also expands how Liam Coen gets him the ball, which can include designed touches in space where his playmaking potential can take over.
Up to this point in Brown's career, he's played a relatively small role in the Washington passing game. His 308 yards in the regular season in 2024 were the most of his career, as were his 30 receptions, according to PFF.
However, Brown would put together a monster postseason, totaling 89 yards in the wildcard round and 98 yards in the divisional round. He finished with 229 yards and a score while averaging 16.4 yards per catch over those three games.
It's Brown's skill set, seeing what he did in the playoffs and the added opportunities that can come in Jacksonville that has Gladstone bullish about what he can bring to the offense this season.
"I think it's easy to look at Dyami's career path and trajectory and know that he's ascending right the way that he closed out last season was nothing short of impressive, and we look for him to carry that into his one-year contract with us," Gladstone said. "He took a bet on himself that a year from now, given the opportunity that he sees here with the Jacksonville Jaguars, that he's going to take another step and earn an even larger contract."
Brown is joining the Jaguars on a one-year deal worth $10 million.
