Jaguars and Travon Walker having 'open conversations' about extension, says Liam Coen

The Jacksonville Jaguars and defensive end Travon Walker are having "open conversations" about a contract extension, said head coach Liam Coen on Monday.

“We’re having open conversations, and at the end of the day, we’ll continue to have those," Coen said via the Florida Times Union.

Walker was the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft by the Jaguars and is entering the final year of his rookie deal. As a first-round pick, the Jaguars have the ability to pick or decline Walker's fifth-year option for the 2025 season.

These fifth-year options, if exercised, come with a predetermined contract value for the following season based on the position played, playing time, and any accolades.

According to Over the Cap, if exercised, Walker's contract for the 2026 season would pay him $14.75 million. The deadline to exercise or decline the option is May 1st.

Before then and sometime over the next month, the Jaguars and Walker could agree to a long-term extension with the fifth-year option only being a one-year deal. Or the Jaguars could pick up the option and agree to an extension at some point over the next year, essentially buying additional time to continue negotiating a new deal.

Walker would total 59 pressures during the 2023 season and 56 pressures in 2024, which ranked 24th among all defensive ends, according to PFF. Walker also tallied the 14th-most run stops as well.
