Iowa baseball earns non-conference win vs. UIC
In a non-conference on Tuesday night, Iowa baseball (11-8, 4-2 Big Ten) was victorious vs. UIC (3-16, 0-0 Missouri Valley) as the Hawkeyes defeated the Flames by a score of 4-1 from Duane Banks Field.
With another three-game Big Ten series looming this weekend, Iowa deployed their bullpen to cover the pitching duties against the Flames, with freshman right-hander Tyler Guerin (0-0, 1.69 ERA) getting the start.
Guerin's outing would be short-lived as he faced four batters, allowing two base-on-balls (one walk, one hit-by-pitch), one unearned run, and one wild pitch while striking out one batter in 1/3 innings.
For the remainder of the 8 2/3 innings, the Hawkeyes would utilize nine different pitchers, with junior righty Ganon Archer (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earning the win, throwing a scoreless inning of work. Fifth-year lefty Ben DeTaeye (0-2, 2 SV, 5.91 ERA) would close out the final two innings, striking out four en route to his second save of the season.

âI am happy we found a way to get it done,â said head coach Rick Heller. âWe had some pitchers really step up in tough situations, that allowed us to hang on and win that game. I just thought it was low energy and low focus especially on a really nice day with a big crowd. I was really disappointed, especially with our hitters.â
As for Iowa's offense, four Hawkeyes recorded hits on the day, with redshirt sophomore Reese Moore being the only batter to record a multi-hit performance. The highlight of Moore's day was his solo home run in the bottom of the first, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie.

Ben Swails and Miles Risley each plated runs for the Hawks in the second and third innings, respectively, and Connor Hennings scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to give Iowa some insurance run protection.
âReese had a good day,â said Heller. âAnswered back from the run we gave them in the first inning and that was kind of how it was all day. We bring Whitlock in, and he does a good job getting a double play ball and we throw it away give them a run. Could have been more, but he got the next out.â

The Flames finished the game outhitting the Hawkeyes by a 6-5 margin but were only able to score one run despite the Hawkeyes delving into eight walks on the day. UIC would do themselves no favors as they stranded 13 total baserunners.
Iowa hit .300 (3-for-10) with runners on base compared to UICâs .071 (1-for-14). The Hawkeyes also stole three bases, while the Flames were caught stealing on their lone attempt.
