Indiana hires Iowa basketball head coach target Darian DeVries
The Iowa basketball head coaching search now officially needs to head in a different direction.
After ESPN's Pete Thamel reported earlier on Tuesday that West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries was no longer a candidate at Iowa, Indiana has now announced the hiring of DeVries as the Hoosiers' next head coach. The Field of 68's Jeff Goodman was the first to report that Indiana was hiring DeVries.
DeVries takes over the reins in Bloomington, Ind., after one season at West Virginia where he led the Mountaineers to a 19-13 (10-10 Big 12) finish. WVU was the first team left out of the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to his lone season in Morgantown, W.Va., DeVries spent six seasons as the head coach at Drake. DeVries guided Drake to six consecutive 20-win seasons, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021, 2023 and 2024.
The Bulldogs were a No. 11 seed in 2021 where they toppled Wichita State in a First Four contest before losing in the Round of 64 against USC. Drake earned No. 12 and No. 10 seeds in the 2023 and 2024 tournaments, respectively.
In his six seasons at Drake, DeVries and the Bulldogs compiled a 150-55 (78-33 Missouri Valley) record. The 49-year-old carries an overall head coaching record of 169-68 into Indiana.
Due to his ties to the state of Iowa, DeVries was one of the first names linked to the Iowa opening. DeVries is from Aplington, Iowa, and played college basketball at Northern Iowa.
DeVries got his coaching start as a graduate manager at Creighton from 1998-01 and then served as an assistant coach for the Bluejays from 2001-18.
