Indiana hires away West Virginia's Darian DeVries after his first season in Morgantown
Indiana has hired Darian DeVries as its next men’s basketball head coach, the school announced Wednesday. DeVries departs West Virginia after just one season to take the reins for the Hoosiers.
DeVries led the Mountaineers to a 19-13 record in his lone season but was left out of the NCAA Tournament. Before his stint at WVU, he built a strong resume at Drake, guiding the Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournament appearances in four years.
During the 2020–21 season, DeVries’ Bulldogs started 18–0 and earned a spot in the AP Top 25. Despite losing two key players to injury, he led Drake to its first at-large NCAA Tournament bid in years and secured the program’s first tournament victory in 50 years with a win over former Missouri Valley Conference rival Wichita State.
DeVries was named MVC Coach of the Year twice in three seasons and signed an eight-year contract extension with Drake in March 2021. He recorded his 100th career win on Nov. 21, 2022, at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam against Tarleton State. West Virginia hired DeVries last March following the departure of interim coach Josh Eilert.
