Playing fantasy golf on the Masters app this year?
There's one important question that many are pondering, because it's the tiebreaker question:
How many total putts will be recorded by the field for the entire tournament?
It's a good question, but one that's not easily answered outside of averages. The Masters media guide does not provide total putts from prior masters outside of the winner and those who made the cut.
The Masters winner averages around 114 putts per tournament, however.
Scottie Scheffler, last year's winner, totaled 109 putts as he shot an 11-under par 277.
So far, 94 players have qualified for The Masters, with one final PGA Tour tournament remaining this weekend at the Valero Texas Open for those still hoping to get in.
If every player who made the cut, let's make it an even 50, averaged 115 putts for the tournament, that would be 5,750 putts from that group. So that leaves 42 golfers playing just two rounds. If they average half that total (let's round up to 58), that's another 2,436 putts.
Together you'd have 8,186 putts for the field.
Use that logic if you'd like, but the total varies year by year.
Taking last year's numbers into account, 60 players made the cut. Patrick Reed needed just 101 putts in 2024 while those who made the cut totaled 7,053 putts, or an average of 117.55 per player for the tournament.
The lowest number of putts for a tournament winner was Mike Weir's 104 (26 per round) in 2003, while Vijay Singh won the 2000 tournament with the most (124, or 31 per round).
