Angelo State tennis celebrated the remarkable collegiate careers of three seniors on Sunday: Avery Durham, Eva Schwartz and Meike Van Deventer. These seniors have guided a young Rambelles team all season that’s found itself in a rough stretch lately.
ASU entered Sunday’s regular season home finale versus UT Permian Basin with an active six-game losing streak. The Rambelles hoped that Senior Day energy would propel them back into the win column, and it did.
Angelo State swept the opening doubles round as Durham and Schwartz finished their match first, winning 6-3. Jessica Li and Ivet Stancheva won their match, 6-2, and Benedetta Raggiotti and Margaux Rene won theirs, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
The rest of the afternoon couldn’t have had a more ideal outcome for the Rambelles, who swept singles as well. Rene won her match, 6-3, 6-2 in her first appearance playing on court #1. All but one match was decided in straight sets. Freshman Mary-June Quinn concluded singles play with a comeback win after dropping the first set as Angelo State cruises to a 7-0 win, its largest margin of victory this season.
After finishing with a 5-3 home record this season, the Rambelles now set their sights on three conference road matchups to conclude the regular season. ASU returns to the court on Saturday, April 19 at St. Mary’s.
