HIGHLIGHTS: No. 6 Rams capitalize on five Dustdevil errors to sweep series
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Click the video above to view highlights from Angelo State’s win over Texas A&M International on Sunday, March 23.
Heading into Sunday’s series finale, the No. 6 Angelo State Rams had outscored the Texas A&M International Dustdevils 43-10 through three games. Fans likely expected offensive fireworks from the Rams’ lineup, given the previous three outcomes. Sunday’s game, however, was a different story.
Angelo State surrendered two runs in the top of the second, trailing 2-0. The Rams cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third inning via a sac fly hit by Weston Valasek. In the bottom of the sixth inning, everything changed.
With Chase Pendley on first base, the Dustdevils failed a pickoff attempt on a wide throw to first base. This allowed Pendley to reach second and third standing up, and then slide home to even the game at two apiece. In the bottom of the seventh inning with nobody out and a runner on second base, Blake Wilhoite showed bunt. Once again, the Dustdevils committed a fielding error as the throw to first base sailed high, allowing Austin Beck to cross home plate safely to give ASU a 3-2 lead. In Beck’s next at-bat the following inning, he showed bunt with runners on the corners. This time, A&M failed to make a play as Valasek came home for an insurance run to pad ASU’s lead at 4-2.
Texas A&M International committed five errors on the day and Angelo State utilized small ball to its advantage once again, en route to clinching the sweep. The Rams hit the road this week for a four-game weekend series at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
