Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has been heavily criticised by former Tottenham and England winger Aaron Lennon.
The Cameroon international was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals last night in a disappointing 2-2 draw for Man Utd in the Europa League.
Ruben Amorim’s side have shown some signs of improvement in their all-round play, but they continue to get disappointing results due to occasional individual errors.
United lack a clinical goal-scorer up front, leading to plenty of missed opportunities, while Onana also very much has it in him to gift goals to their opponents.
Last night was undoubtedly all about Onana as he looked really poor for both of Lyon’s goals, with Lennon saying his teammates will be “fuming” with him.
Andre Onana heavily criticised for another poor Manchester United performance
This is not the first time Onana has been the focus after a bad United result, and it increasingly seems like it won’t be the last.
Lennon didn’t hold back as he was on punditry duty for the BBC, saying: “They’re two massive mistakes. He has got to save both of them in my opinion and he has cost United today.”
The report adds that Lennon said he felt sure Onana’s teammates would be “fuming” at the former Inter Milan goalkeeper for letting the club down with such a poor performance.
This wasn’t an ideal response from Onana after he also received stinging criticism from former United player Nemanja Matic before the game.
The Serbian midfielder branded Onana one of United’s worst ever goalkeepers, and it’s fair to say the 29-year-old didn’t exactly go out there and silence his critics.
United will now hope to put in a much better performance when they host Lyon at Old Trafford for the second leg of this Europa League quarter-final tie.
