BASEBALL: Inola sweeps Vinita with strong pitching, timely hitting
Inola left no doubt in its district series against Vinita, using dominant pitching and clutch offense to sweep the two-game set.
After shutting out the Hornets 6-0 on the road Monday, the Longhorns completed the sweep with a 5-1 home victory Tuesday, breaking a late tie with a four-run sixth inning.
With back-to-back wins, Inola (4-1, 4-0) solidified its first-place standing in District 4A-7 and showcased its ability to win both with power and precision.
INOLA 6, VINITA 0
With one swing, Connor Pratt put the finishing touches on a dominant performance for Inola.
The Longhorns broke open a four-run lead in the sixth inning when Pratt crushed a two-run homer to left field, sealing a 6-0 road victory over Vinita in District 4A-7 action Monday.
Inola set the tone early, striking first in the third inning when Finley Atchison delivered a two-run single to center, scoring Pratt and Rowdie Rock. Eli Berg followed with an RBI single, bringing home Wiley Atwell to make it 3-0.
Atwell later added to the lead in the fifth, crossing the plate on an error before Pratt’s blast put the game out of reach.
The Longhorns’ pitching was just as impressive. Brock Flanagan earned the win with a dominant five-inning outing, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out nine.
Zander Williams closed the door in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
Atchison and Pratt led the way offensively with two RBIs each, while Rock set the tone from the leadoff spot with a 3-for-5 performance. Berg added two hits of his own, and Inola’s aggressive baserunning was on display with six stolen bases, including two apiece from Rock and Berg.
The Hornets managed just four hits in the loss, with Braydon Stonebarger, Trey Tanner, Keegan Johnston and Nick Martins each collecting one. Martins took the loss on the mound despite striking out nine over five innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits.
INOLA 5, VINITA 1
For five innings, Inola and Vinita battled in a tense, low-scoring affair.
But when the Longhorns finally broke through in the sixth, they made it count.
Rock ripped a two-run double down the right-field line to put Inola in front, and Atchison followed with a two-run single to center, sealing a 5-1 district victory Tuesday over Vinita.
The game started with the Hornets taking an early lead in the first inning when Tanner scored on a passed ball, but Inola evened the score in the third when Gideon Rogers grounded out to bring home Pratt.
The tie remained until the sixth, when the Longhorns' offense delivered in the clutch.
Williams earned the win in relief, throwing 2 2/3 shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out five. Rock started the game and was equally dominant, striking out nine across 4 1/3 innings while surrendering just one unearned run on one hit.
Berg led Inola’s offense with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, while Rock and Atchison drove in two runs apiece. Pratt, Brett Cornett and Atwell also contributed to the Longhorns’ late-game rally.
Johnston and Logan Floyd each had one hit for Vinita, which struggled to generate offense against Inola’s dominant pitching.
Tanner took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing just four runs on six hits while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.
