Hankinson boys' hoops beat Oakes 58-45 to win Region 1 title
Mar. 13—JAMESTOWN — The Hankinson boys' basketball team pulled away late to get a 58-45 win over Oakes High School on Thursday, March 13, in the championship game of the 2025 NDHSAA Class B Region 1 boys' basketball tournament at the Jamestown Civic Center.
The win sees the Pirates get revenge after losing to the Tornadoes twice previously this season.
The Tornadoes took an early 5-2 lead before the Pirates fought back to take an 8-7 lead and they were able to stretch it out to 16-12 heading into the second quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Pirates were able to push their lead out to 18-12 but the Tornadoes were able to respond with a run to tie the game up at 18. The Pirates responded from there to take a 19-18 lead and that carried into the half where the Pirates were up 24-18 at the break.
In the first half, the Tornadoes shot 33.3% from the field, 2-for-9 from three and they did not attempt a free throw. The Pirates shot 50% from the field, 1-for-3 from three and 5-for-8 from the free throw line.
The Pirates' biggest advantage in the first half came in their ability to limit the amount of possessions the Tornadoes had with them possessing a 10-4 defense to offensive rebound advantage. In total, the Pirates outrebounded the Tornadoes 12-11.
The third quarter was all about runs with the Pirates taking a 28-20 lead before the Tornadoes once again went on a run to bring it closer at 28-24. The Pirates punched right back though to push the lead out to 37-26 and they took a 37-30 lead into the fourth.
The Pirates were able to stretch their lead out to 41-33 before the Tornadoes once again stormed back and brought it closer at 44-38. The Pirates once again responded by pushing it out to 48-40 and pulled away from there. The Pirates put the finishing touches on their win late when Raeshaun Earl stole a ball at midcourt, and drove to the other end of the floor and slammed it down to give his team a 57-45 lead.
The Pirates junior finished the game with 30 points on 12-for-21 shooting.
The Pirates will now have to wait to see who they face in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday, March 20. The Tornadoes will look to book their spot in the state tournament when they play Midway/Minto at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.
