Griffins derail Iron Horses to spoil home debut
There was some high level basketball Sunday afternoon at the Berry Bowl when the Logansport Iron Horses hosted the St. Louis Griffins for their home debut.
The Griffins pulled away for a 140-115 victory to put a little bit of a damper on the Iron Horses’ first ever game in Logansport.
St. Louis (4-1) won its fourth straight game while handing Logansport (2-4) its fourth straight defeat.
“Size, as you can see, we’re very small and we can compete with Kokomo, but these guys are a good basketball team, good players, and the size takes advantage they have takes over after a period of time,” Logansport coach Wayne Casey said. “They’ve played for the championship for the last two years. The league championship, not the Midwest, the whole TBL.”
Casey said he would have preferred to have seen any other team on the schedule than St. Louis.
“I asked to take somebody else, but look what they sent us,” he said.
The Griffins had eight players in double figures and two more with eight points apiece. Cameron Williams, formerly of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, led with 24 points. Coreontae DeBerry, a 6-foot-10 center who played at Cincinnati, had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Iron Horses had four in double figures. Cortez Mosley, formerly a standout at Langston University where he played in an NAIA National Championship game last year, led the way with 34 points and 13 rebounds.
“Mosely played well, 34 off the bench. He had 27 last night,” Casey said. “We should have won last night. We were six seconds away from winning last night.”
Cameron Estil had 23 points and 13 boards. Joe Rush scored 18 and Daniel Parrish had 16 and 10.
Robert Phinisee, the former McCutcheon star who went on to play at Indiana and Cincinnati, probably had his roughest showing at the Berry Bowl of his career as he was held to just one point on 0 of 9 shooting from the field.
“The whole league is watching him. He’s averaging 25 a game,” Casey said. “It ain’t gonna be easy. He’ll be better.”
Logansport dropped a game to the Kokomo BobKats 116-113 Saturday night in Kokomo. Mosley scored 27, Estil had 17 points and 16 rebounds, Bass Ollie scored 17, Chris Littlejohn had 14 and 10, Parrish and James Moore each scored 11 and Phinisee had 10.
It’s a tough situation for the Iron Horses being an expansion team going against more established teams.
“My God, it’s really hard,” Casey said. “It’s an uphill battle every day. But hopefully we’ll get better. I mean, we started off good. We’ll get better. You gotta take your bumps and bruises.
“We started 0-5 in West Virginia and I finished 20-8. So it’s going to be a process. Yeah, we’ll be fine.”
A big part of the TBL is giving back to the community. The Iron Horses are hosting a free basketball camp for kids from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Cass County Family YMCA.
“We have a camp on Wednesday and all the kids need to come out. It’ll be fun for you,” Casey said.
“We just gotta keep getting the community involved. It was a gray area. They showed up today which is great. I think it’ll be better.”
The Iron Horses then head off for a 12-hour drive to Canada on Thursday for a game before heading back home for a home game with the Lebanon Leprechauns at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 1.
“It’s a process,” Casey said. “And we need size. So in this period of now till Thursday, Friday, I’m out to get size. I’m gonna find size.”
