Granlund Scores Twice, Dallas Defeats Ducks in OT
A backhand shot from Mikael Granlund gave the Dallas Stars a victory over the Anaheim Ducks in front of a raucous crowd at the American Airlines Center Tuesday night as the team celebrated Noche Mexicana.
The Stars returned home after a four-game road trip that spanned over ten days. Although the Stars were able to come home due to a rare break of four days off during that road trip, the Stars have only played four home games since February 1.
The Stars faced the Anaheim Ducks for the final time this season in the opener of a four-game home stand, and were looking for their first win against the improving Ducks.
The Stars were looking to get back into their normal winning ways after going 1-2-1 on the road trip, including losses to Winnipeg and to Colorado in overtime Sunday. Part of that meant trying to be more disciplined in taking penalties, something they were not able to do against the Colorado Avalanche. But less than five minutes into the first period, the Stars started the parade to the penalty box when Matt Duchene took a call for slashing. However, all would be forgiven when Duchene drew a penalty later in the period.
That Stars power-play would turn out to be a fruitful one, as Wyatt Johnston deflected a puck from Joe Pavelski's old office right in front of the net. This goal on home ice marked a point in 15 straight home games for Johnston.
Penalties on both sides continued the early theme but Dallas took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission and had looked solid in the opening 20 minutes.
Both teams brought all the energy to the second period, but at times the game got really sloppy and a bit chippy. A little over two minutes in, Nikita Nesterenko evened up the playing field for the Ducks.
But an answer came quickly for the Stars as Granlund potted his `17th goal of the season less than two minutes later. After the two goals, the penalty box was a revolving door for both teams.
The Ducks got tagged with the next two penalties. On the second one, Mikko Rantanen was called for holding, putting the two teams 4-on-4. That would also not last long as Mason Marchment quickly got called for interference and suddenly, the Stars were on a rare non-overtime 4-on-3 penalty kill, which turned into about a minute of 5-on-3 when the Ducks initial penalty to Isaac Lundestrom expired.
It didn't take long for the Ducks to find the back of the net, but referee Justin Kea immediately waved it off as no goal due to goaltender interference. After taking a look, the Ducks challenged the call on the ice, and shortly after, the call was reversed and Leo Carlsson got credit for the tying goal to make it 2-2.
Just when it felt like both teams had settled back into 5-on-5 play, the Ducks got a breakaway in the dying minute of the middle frame. A delayed penalty for slashing was called on Oskar Back, and after almost 30 seconds before Dallas touched the puck, Carlsson was awarded a penalty shot.
Carlsson went backhand-forehand all the way across the net and Jake Oettinger was unable to make the save. The Stars were suddenly trailing 3-2 heading into the third period.
The final frame was put back on the rails between both teams. There were no penalties called, but the Stars were able to even things up 3-3. Jamie Benn and Bourque did the dirty work behind the goal line to get the puck to Thomas Harley, who sniped the puck past Lukas Dostal to get his second point of the game.

Oettinger made a huge save on a 2-on-1 and then was bailed out by the post on his left shoulder to keep the score tied up at the end of sixty minutes.
In overtime, Granlund was gifted a puck in the heart of the slot that was over-skated by a Ducks player looking to break the other way, and made no mistake as he swiftly got a backhand shot over the shoulder of Dostal for the 4-3 win for Dallas.
Dallas is right back at home Thursday in a matchup of two in-form teams as the Tampa Bay Lightning head to town. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. at the American Airlines Center.
