Last week, we looked at Lancaster's Fulton Relays, so this week, we had a request to turn to some track in the county schools.
So, we turn our attention to the spring of 1997.
Instead of focusing on an individual meet, we are going to hit some highlights.
At the Cole-McCafferty Invitational at Amanda-Clearcreek High School, Fairfield Union's Jenny Sitterley set two meet records. She ran a 5:21.35 in the 1,600-meter and an 11:41 in the 3,200 for the records. She also won the 800 at the meet with a time of 2:26.78.
Amanda-Clearcreek's girls won the 3,200 relay.
On the boys' side, Fairfield Union's Rob Myers won the 1,600 (4:44.25) and the 800 (2:01.32).
Amanda's Rick Gaal won the 300 hurdles at 41.82.
The Bloom-Carroll Invitational that year was a battle on the boys' side between Fairfield Union and Columbus Academy. The Falcons leaned on their distance runners — with Rob Myers winning the 1,600 (4:32) and the 800 (2:01). He also anchored the winning 3,200 relay. Leland Matheny beat out Bloom-Carroll's Ian Schwartz for the 3,200 title.
Alas, Columbus Academy would still win the title, scoring 83 points to Fairfield Union's 81.
At the Fairfield Union Track Inivtational, rain showers poured down at the beginning of the meet. The Falcons dominated the meet on the boys side with 87 points to Granville's 70.
Again, Rob Myers was one of the standouts, winning the 800 and 1,600. Millersport's Kevin Hardy won the long jump, while Rick Gaal of Amanda won the 300 hurdles. Bloom-Carroll's Ian Schwartz won the 3,200.
On the girls' side, Heath edged out Harley for the win. Fairfield Union girls were third with 66 points, while Fisher Catholic was fourth with 53.
Sitterley set three meet records, winning the 800 (2:24.98), 1,600 (5:16.36) and the 3,200 (11:32.9).
Finally, the Lion Relays at Liberty Union.
Fisher Catholic girls won with 78 points due to four first-place finishes in 12 events. The Irish sprint medley team of Libby Wilson, Heather Gray, Kellie Griffin and Anne Thimmes set a meet record of 1:56.2. They also won the 800-meter relay in a time of 1:52.2.
Kami Miller, Molly Muetzel, Elizabeth Snook and Mary Ellen Nash won the 6,400, while Kate Krulia, Gray and Wilson won the Irish their lone field event — as all cleared 13-10 in the high jump.
