Girls basketball tournament: Benilde-St. Margaret’s wins third straight Class 3A title
Benilde-St. Margaret’s claimed its third straight Class 3A crown on Saturday at Williams Arena, downing Marshall 73-57.
The Red Knights had four players score in double figures. Kendall McGee led the way with 19 points, while Zahara Bishop had 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Sydney Friedly and Pressley Watkins each scored 13. Watkins also had six assists.
Marshall scored the first bucket of the game, but that marked the Tigers’ only lead. Marshall was within five early in the second half before a 13-0 Red Knights run effectively put the game away. Benilde-St. Margaret’s shot 62% from the field in the second half.
Taleigha Bigler led third-seeded Marshall (29-2) with 19 points.
With the win, top-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s (26-6) proved its dominance extended beyond star guard Olivia Olson, who led each of the Red Knights’ previous two title runs and is now a freshman at Michigan. The Red Knights won their final 12 games of the season.
