Gerety's granny, Fosberg's first college home run part of whirlwind month at Northeastern
The spotlight usually fades with the last out, in this case a grounder to first. But the highlights continue on.
Northeastern University’s annual appearance on NESN to begin the baseball season is a mere curiosity to Red Sox Nation. The Huskies, however, are worth another look. Most notably, a 10,000-mile round trip and a pair of round-trippers.
Franklin’s Ryan Gerety and Natick’s Will Fosberg have been in the middle of NU’s winning and whirlwind opening month.
“I’m loving every minute of it so far,” said Gerety, who began the week leading the team with 14 runs batted in to go with a .339 batting average.

Both lefty swingers came off the bench to face the Red Sox on Feb. 21, a quick (2 hours, 15 minutes) 5-2 loss at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida. Both struck out in their only at bats, but Northeastern’s longest road trip in program history – after three years of planning and fundraising – was just beginning. And Gerety and Fosberg soon made plenty of connections.
NU, which traveled as far as Arizona a year ago, played four games in Hawaii before sweeping a four-game set at San Diego State.
“It was definitely a grind,” said Fosberg, a catcher who hit his first college home run in his team’s only win in Hawaii. “Our athletic trainers and coaches helped us out. You’re never going to be completely prepared, but that West Coast trip was a big challenge.”
The day the Huskies embarked for the Pacific, they were told to stay up late – until roughly 2 a.m. – take a nap, then wake up to later to sleep on the plane.
"It was tough the first couple of days; I was waking up at like 5 a.m.,” said Gerety, who has started all but one game this season and plays all three outfield positions. “But I got used to it was time went on.”
Gerety's granny lifts Northeastern past Harvard
Northeastern played in front of large crowds during the extended trip: 6,794 at JetBlue and 4,472 on the Saturday where Fosberg went deep in Hawaii. Upon their return, the 503 who appeared at Friedman Diamond in Brookline this past Saturday saw the team’s most pulsating win of the season.
NU not only trailed Harvard 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies did not have a hit. Gerety ruined the no-hit and shutout bid on one swing, hitting his first career collegiate homer, a drive to left-center that barely cleared the wall before bouncing back on the warning track.
An inning later with the bases loaded and still down by a run, Gerety hit one in the same direction, but this one went over the scoreboard for a grand slam and the winning runs in an eventual 6-3 victory.
“The first one was a sigh of relief to get that one out of the way,” Gerety said. “I caught the second one a little better, so I had a little bit of a feeling that it would go out. I was definitely amped when I saw it go over. Honestly, I can’t remember it to its fullest extent because I kind of blacked out a little bit, but I was just excited to help out the team.”
Fosberg was on deck for Gerety’s granny.
“He definitely got us going,” Fosberg said. “He put the team on his back and helped us get a big victory, which we needed. We were all super hyped up. Huge hit. It was an exciting moment for sure.”
NU completed a sweep of Harvard to improve to 11-6 on Sunday as Gerety singled, walked twice and dropped a sacrifice bunt. Lincoln-Sudbury grad Cooper Tarantino earned his first start of the season (designated hitter) and Westborough’s Carter Bentley started in right field. Medfield’s Jack Goodman went 1-for-4 and leads the team with a .377 average. Franklin High grad Henry DiGiorgio did not play but has two starts this season.
Playing against Red Sox 'an awesome experience'
While Northeastern will play at Fenway Park in the final round of the Beanpot in late April, the opportunity to play against the Red Sox still resonates.
“That’s always an awesome experience,” Gerety said. “We got to see the Big Three (Red Sox prospects Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell). Being able to see those guys and seeing what it takes to play at that level was awesome."
“I grew up watching it and to play in it was definitely cool,” Fosberg said.
Gerety has another, more recent memory to cherish. On Sunday, his alma mater won the Division 1 state boys basketball championship in Lowell. After the Huskies finished off an 8-4 victory over Harvard, Franklin took the court against Newton North at the Tsongas Center.
Gerety, who many times was part of the Franklin student section known as Rattle City, monitored the game on social media and was overjoyed with the outcome.
“I was super stoked for them,” he said. “It’s an awesome experience for them.”
