The hits weren't there for FSU softball (34-6, 9-1) on Friday evening, and for that, its 14-game winning streak ended in front of a sold-out crowd of 1801 people at the Seminole Softball Complex as Virginia (26-10, 7-5) shut out FSU 2-0.
FSU only had two hits the whole game and was struck out eight times by UVA's pitchers Courtney Layne and Eden Bigham. Bigham was the winning pitcher as she finished with six strikeouts and allowed one run and one walk. Katie Dack and Annabelle Widra were the only two who had one hit for the Seminoles.
FSU's defense didn't have a clean game after allowing two errors, but it kept the Cavs scoreless until the fifth inning. Leadoff hitter Jade Hylton gave UVA's first score of the day with a two-run homer to take the lead and will hang on for the rest of the evening.
The Seminoles had four pitchers on the circle but only threw one strikeout. Makenna Reid started for FSU and lasted 2.1 innings after allowing three hits. Widra, who relieved for Reid, was the losing pitcher. It's her second loss of the season. Ashtyn Danley and Julia Apsel also saw action.
FSU will return to the Plex on Saturday for game two against the Cavaliers at 1 p.m., followed by game three on Sunday at noon.
