FSU baseball's Alex Lodise, Joey Volini sweep ACC weekly awards

Given Florida State baseball's success early this season, it's pretty surprising the Seminoles went six weeks without any ACC Player of the Week honors.

However, that changed Monday, with FSU sweeping the Week 7 conference honors as shortstop Alex Lodise won ACC Player of the Week while redshirt junior LHP Joey Volini won ACC Pitcher of the Week.

Lodise hit .500 (10-for-20) with 10 hits, eight RBI, four home runs and a 1.300 slugging percentage over FSU's 3-1 week. He hit for the cycle in the Seminoles’ walk-off win against rival Florida on Tuesday in Jacksonville and then added three more home runs, six hits and four RBI in the series win at Notre Dame.

At the midway point of the regular season, Lodise leads the ACC with a .466 batting average, a .871 slugging percentage, 54 hits and 101 total bases and ranks fourth with 11 home runs.

Volini pitched his second consecutive seven-inning complete game in FSU's 4-2 win at Notre Dame on Sunday. With his seventh straight win in as many starts to begin his FSU career, Volini is the first Seminole starter to begin a season at 7-0 or better since Michael Hyde posted an 8-0 start in 2008. The USF transfer leads the ACC with seven wins and 43.1 innings pitched, has the best ERA among starting pitchers at 1.25 and ranks second with 63 strikeouts.

Tuesday preview

No. 4 FSU (23-4, 7-2 in ACC) hosts Jacksonville (16-11, 6-3 in A-Sun) Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the second of three games this season between the in-state foes.

Sophomore LHP Hudson Rowan (1-0, 6.75 ERA over 2.2 innings) will make his first career start for the Seminoles against the Dolphins. JU will start junior RHP Aaron Zenus (3.38 ERA over 16 innings), who threw 2.1 innings in the first FSU-JU game of the season (a 9-6 FSU win at JU) and allowed one run on three hits, striking out four batters.
