Brandon Bennett kept up with Tim Harris Jr. through the years, from his time at Miami to UCF. So when Harris Jr. followed Gus Malzahn from Orlando to Tallahassee, the new Florida State assistant coaches were quick to continue the relationship with Bennett.
"I was with him most of the day," Bennett said on Thursday. "We built our relationship since before he came to Florida State. He was at Miami. He’s bounced around a couple places. We kept in touch most of the time. I’ve known him for a minute."
A four-star receiver from Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage, Bennett got an up-close view at FSU's new-look offense with Malzahn at Thursday's practice.
"Very explosive. Fits my play style, exactly how I would like," Bennett said. "... The new offensive system, they stretch the field. Get their playmakers the ball in space. I feel like if I were to come in, they would put me in a position to make plays. And that’s all a receiver can ask for."
Bennett has already set up an official visit to FSU for June 6, between official visits at Georgia (June 1) and Florida (June 13). What stands out about FSU?
"Just the environment, it’s a great environment," Bennett said. "I feel like since you’re going to be going to school for the next three to four years, you have to go somewhere where it’s enjoyable to live. I feel like that plays a factor. Player development, they send guys to the NFL. I’m trying to go to the NFL."
Bennett also has another connection at FSU in cornerbacks coach Patrick Surtain, who used to coach at American Heritage. He has long heard from Surtain about what the FSU assistant likes about Tallahassee.
"Every time he gets down here, he gets a chance to talk about it, how much he likes it up there," Bennett said. "And I can see why. I can see why he likes it so much."
