Former Texas A&M QB signs with the Detroit Lions
During the Kevin Sumlin era at Texas A&M, recruiting elite quarterbacks was a regular occurrence. While Kellen Mond was by far the most consistent signal caller, it's pretty crazy to think that future No. 1 overall NFL Draft selection Kyler Murray and former five-star Kyle Allen were on the same roster for a season.
While Murray has been the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback since the 2019 season, Allen's interesting NFL career began as an undrafted free agent in 2018 with the Carolina Panthers, and he has stayed in the league as a reliable backup ever since.
Allen's career at Texas A&M took a sharp turn after a shoulder injury hindered his play during the 2015 season, ultimately leading to his transfer to Houston for two seasons before entering the NFL Draft. During his Texas A&M career, Allen appeared in 21 games, completing 278 of 475 passes for 3,532 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
While Allen's career in College Station included several memorable performances, he never lived up to his immense potential, which is usually the case for high-ranking prospects at the quarterback position.
After spending the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Allen will join former Texas A&M tight end and Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell for the 2025 season, likely competing for the backup job behind starting QB Jared Goff.
During his seven seasons in the league, Allen has appeared in 31 games, including 19 starts. His most productive season came in 2019, after injuries led to Allen starting 12 games. He threw for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
