Lions are adding another quarterback in free agency
The Detroit Lions were quiet in free agency throughout Thursday, using the morning to introduce newcomers D.J. Reed, Roy Lopez and . Just when you thought it was safe to call it a day, GM Brad Holmes threw a serious curveball.
Per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Lions are signing free agent quarterback Kyle Allen. The 29-year-old Allen has been an NFL journeyman, with Detroit representing his fifth team in as many seasons. Allen played 2024 in Pittsburgh after a 2023 season backing up Josh Allen in Buffalo. He hasn't thrown a pass in a regular season game since two emergency starts for the Houston Texans in 2022.
It's an interesting move, given how consistently head coach Dan Campbell has praised Hendon Hooker as the primary backup behind starter Jared Goff. The Lions did not have a third QB behind Hooker other than Jake Fromm, who was signed to a reserve/future contract. Detroit didn't carry a third quarterback on the active roster in 2024 aside from the late-year return of previously retired No. 2 Teddy Bridgewater.
