The big move of the offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers was to trade for former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf. The team gave him the largest contract in franchise history for a street free agent in hopes he can pair up with George Pickens to form one of the most dynamic receiver tandems in the league.
However, there's a catch. As of right now, the quarterback who will be throwing to Metcalf and Pickens is Mason Rudolph. Pittsburgh continues to sit on their hands and wait for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision but could find themselves looking for the answer at quarterback via the 2025 NFL draft.
Former Steeler Ryan Clark talked about this on NFL Live and he offered up a potential solution. Clark believes the best choice is for the Steelers to trade up for former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
"I think that move would be something that makes sense for Omar Khan," Clark said. "Omar Khan has worked the general manager position in Pittsburgh like no one ever has. He's been aggressive. You go out, and you get DK Metcalf to add to George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth. I think this is what you have to do."
This is an interesting proposition but not a simple one. Pundits are all over the place when it comes to Sanders' draft stock. Some mock drafts have Sanders going No. 2 overall to the Cleveland Browns and others have him falling all the way out of the round. This seriously complicates where the Steelers would need to trade up to if they wanted to draft Sanders.
Looking at the first round, the best best-case scenario is that the Steelers would need to move ahead of the Indianapolis Colts at pick No. 14. Trading up from 21 to 13 would likely cost the Steelers, at minimum, their first in 2025 and their second in 2026. That is the bare minimum and would likely be more than that.
