Former Raiders assistant GM joining Dolphins' front office, per report
The Miami Dolphins added former Las Vegas Raiders assistant general manager Champ Kelly to their front office staff as a senior personnel executive, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Kelly began his NFL talent evaluation career in 2007 as a scout with the Denver Broncos and worked his way up to assistant director of pro personnel with the franchise. He then spent seven seasons in the Chicago Bears' front office before joining the Raiders in 2022 as assistant GM.
After three seasons together, Kelly and the Raiders mutually agreed to part ways in February. That decision came just a few days after Kelly interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars' GM vacancy, which eventually went to former Los Angeles Rams executive James Gladstone.
"I believe in building the team from inside out, meaning to start with offensive and defensive fronts," Kelly said in a 2023 interview with Sports Illustrated's Hondo Carpenter. "The key is being able to obtain the quarterback, then be able to protect that player through scheme and skill. Next, we must be able to disrupt the opponent’s passer on the defensive side of the ball through both rush and coverage.”
Earlier this year, former Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie left his position as a senior personnel executive with the Dolphins to become vice president/football advisor with the Tennessee Titans.
