Dolphins adding 'nasty' veteran blocking tight end, per report
The Miami Dolphins are adding veteran tight end Pharaoh Brown on a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Brown, who turns 31 in May, is now set to join his eighth different NFL team since joining the league as an undrafted free agent in 2017. After brief stints with the Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns to begin his career, Brown made his first significant contributions with the Houston Texans. In 31 games with the team, Brown started 24 times and recorded 44 receptions for 406 yards and two touchdowns.
More recently, he was briefly with the Browns (again), Indianapolis Colts, and New England Patriots before spending the 2024 season with the Seattle Seahawks. In 15 games with Seattle, Brown recorded eight receptions for 65 yards.
While his receiving numbers don't jump off the screen, the Dolphins likely targeted Brown for his blocking prowess. That's the same reason the Seahawks signed the tight end in 2024.
"Pharaoh in our opinion is one of the top two or three blocking tight ends in the National Football League, he brings a nastiness to us," Seahawks general manager John Schneider said at the time. "He's a guy that can take care of the C-gap, he can block down, he's nasty. He's going to bring a toughness to our offense. He's a tempo-setter. He's a little bit of an old soul that way. He's going to fight you and not back down, and I think that's going to rub off on our offensive identity."
The Dolphins got Pro Bowl play out of tight end Jonnu Smith in 2024, but parted with veteran Durham Smythe to save salary cap space. The team also has tight ends Julian Smith, Tanner Conner, and Hayden Rucci under contract.
