Kyren Lacy, a former LSU wide receiver, has died, the university’s football department confirmed Sunday. He was 24.
No cause of death was announced.
“We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU Football student-athlete Kyren Lacy,” the school said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.”
An unnamed family member confirmed to local news outlet WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, that the Louisiana-born athlete died in the Houston area, according to NBC News.
The football star’s death came after his alleged involvement in a car accident back in December that killed a 78-year-old man in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. Lacy was under investigation and facing charges of negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run and reckless operation of a vehicle.
Lacy turned himself in to authorities on Jan. 12 and was released on bond.
A grand jury was scheduled to start hearing evidence in the case on Monday, WAFB-TV reports.
