Florida basketball assistant coach Kevin Hovde taking Columbia HC job
Florida basketball assistant coach Kevin Hovde will leave the program at the end of the season to take the head coaching job at Columbia, the Columbia program announced Monday.
Hovde has been in charge of the Florida Gators' offense during his three years under head coach Todd Golden. The Gators' offense currently ranks second in the country this week per KenPom in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency, behind only Duke.
With Hovde helping design an up-tempo attack, Florida has posted the two highest-scoring seasons in program history, averaging 85.6 points per game last season and 85.4 to date this season. UF's 356 3-point field goals is one away from matching the program record of 357, set in 2011-12.
"Hov and I have worked together five out of six years I've been a head coach," Golden recently said. "He's just an incredible basketball mind, but an even better person. Again just incredibly mature, responsible. Always being ahead of the game with what he does. He deserves a lot of credit for how explosive our offense is."
It's a homecoming of sorts for Hovde, who worked at Columbia for five seasons from 2011-16, four of those as an assistant coach.
Hovde is the second Florida assistant coach to land a head coaching job in the span of a week. On Friday, UF assistant coach John Andrzejek announced he's taking the head coaching job at Campbell.
Both Hovde and Andrzejek will stay on UF's staff through its NCAA Tournament run. The No. 1 seed Gators next play Thursday vs No. 4 seed Maryland at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif. (7:39 p.m. TBS. TruTV).
