Last night, the Firebirds won game three of their first-round playoff series against the Kitchener Rangers. The win halves Kitcheners' lead, making the series 2-1 in the Rangers' favour.
19-year-old goaltender Nathan Day was the star of the show for Flint, making 30 saves in the first 40 minutes of the game. Especially early in the game, Day came up with save after save, letting his team stay in the game before eventually grabbing the lead in the third period.
The Firebirds took over in the third period, outshooting Kitchener 19-8 in the final frame while picking up a pair of goals. Kaden Pitre broke the deadlock just over six minutes into the third period, firing a shot from the slot past Clarkson University commit Jackson Parsons.
Just over a minute later, Matthew Wang made it 2-0. He slammed home the rebound generated by Edmonton Oilers prospect Connor Clattenburg's shot. To add insult to injury, the goal was scored short-handed.
In many ways, this series has been closer than fans would have predicted. The third-place Kitchener Rangers were one of only a handful of teams to beat London twice this season. They had the second-best winning percentage this season with a formidable 45-15-4-2 record.
Meanwhile, Flint entered the playoffs with a winning percentage below .500, having finished the season with a 29-34-2-3 record.
Kingston's "Unsung Heroes" Shine In Game Two Double-Overtime WinLast night, the Kingston Frontenacs took a 2-0 series lead by defeating the Sudbury Wolves 4-3 in double overtime.
So far, Kitchener has outscored Flint 10-4, taking the first two games of the series on home ice. Their 6-1 win in game two accounts for the majority of the difference, as game one was a close affair that the Rangers eventually won 4-3 in overtime.
All that said, the series has been incredibly close except for Kitchener's runaway win in game two.
The win gives Flint the opportunity to tie the series at two if they can pick up a win tomorrow night on home ice. However, to do so, the Firebirds will need to have another strong performance, as Kitchener will undoubtedly be looking to put the series away as early as they can.
Puck drop for game four will take place at 7:00 p.m. from the Dort Financial Centre in Flint tomorrow evening.
