FHSAA Lacrosse Rankings: Gulf Breeze boys, Pensacola Catholic girls remain area's top teams
The Florida High School Athletic Association lacrosse season continues to plug away, and the second weekly rankings from the state were released on Monday.
Any games played that night were not included toward a team's record, rating or strength of schedule. Though, not many games – if any – are being played since Northwest Florida schools are currently on spring break.
On the boys side, Gulf Breeze – despite suffering its first loss of the season to rival Pensacola Catholic – is still the area's top-ranked team at No. 12 with a 9-1 record and a rating of 19.179. That's a one-spot drop from the first rankings last week. Pensacola Catholic improved two spots to No. 19 with a 10-1 record and a rating of 16.000.
The Dolphins have an astounding nearly 14-point advantage over second-ranked Niceville in District 1-2A.
Pensacola Catholic remains the top girls lacrosse team in the area with a rating of 15.802 and a 10-2 record, both losses coming to Central Florida teams over the weekend. The Crusaders are ranked 19th in the state. Navarre fell one spot as well to No. 37, but is the second-best team with a rating of 11.785 and an 11-1 record.
District tournaments are less than a month away, starting on April 9 and going through April 17. Regional tournaments begin the following week on April 22 for girls lacrosse, and April 23 for boys lacrosse.
Here are the second FHSAA lacrosse rankings for teams from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, plus a way-too-early playoff watch.

Way-too-early region playoff picture
District tournaments aren't for another month, but it's still fun to take a look at what the playoff scenarios would look like if the regular season ended today as far as region tournaments.
District champions automatically advance to the region tournament after the district tourney, and there are four at-large bids per region in both classifications.
Rankings are bound to change after district tournaments as well, so we'll pretend that they didn't change at all through districts to make things a little easier. Remember: anything can happen in the playoffs.
Here's what the region tournaments would look like.
Girls Region 1-2A
- 1. Lake Mary (4)* vs. 8. Fletcher (2)*
- 2. Ponte Vedra (3)* vs. 7. Winter Springs (4)
- 3. Bartram Trail (3) vs. 6. Gulf Breeze (1)
- 4. Navarre (1)* vs. 5. Tocoi Creek (3)
Notes: Region 1-2A is a little unique since Fletcher, the presumed District 2 champion, is ranked ninth in the region. That means Lake Brantley, ranked eighth, would lose out on an at-large bid. Navarre would host Tocoi Creek to start the tournament in the quarterfinals, while gulf Breeze would head to Bartram Trail.
Girls Region 1-1A
- 1. Episcopal (2)* vs. 8. Seacoast Collegiate (1)
- 2. Oak Hall (4)* vs. 7. St. Augustine (3)
- 3. Bolles (3)* vs. 6. Gainesville (4)
- 4. Pensacola Catholic (1)* vs. 5. South Walton (1)
Notes: Region 1-1A is pretty straightforward with all four presumed district champions as the top four teams in region. Pensacola Catholic would host district rival South Walton to start in the quarterfinals. Booker T. Washington, ranked 10th in the region, just misses out on a spot for an at-large bid.
Boys Region 1-2A
- 1. Ponte Vedra (3)* vs. 8. Tocoi Creek (4)*
- 2. Gulf Breeze (1)* vs. 7. Niceville (1)
- 3. Creekside (3) vs. 6. Bartram Trail (3)
- 4. Nease (3) vs. 5. Fletcher (2)*
Notes: All four district champions are in the top eight teams of the region, but Nease would have to travel to District 2's Fletcher, and Tocoi Creek would lose out on hosting as a lower-seeded district champion. Gulf Breeze would have district rival Niceville in the quarterfinals.
Boys Region 1-1A
- 1. Bolles (3)* vs. 8. Trinity Catholic (4)
- 2. Oak Hall (4)* vs. 7. Maclay (2)
- 3. Episcopal (2)* vs. 6. St. Augustine (3)
- 4. Pensacola Catholic (1)* vs. 5. South Walton (1)
Notes: Things are pretty simple in Region 1-1A. All four district champions are the top four teams in the region. Pensacola Catholic, as the fourth seed, would have a repeat of last season and host South Walton in the region quarterfinals. West Florida, ranked ninth in the region, just misses out on an at-large bid in the tournament.
