Vikings have positive place in PFF's power rankings following free agency
The Minnesota Vikings attacked the first week of free agency as aggressively as any team in the league. They addressed the interiors of both offensive and defensive lines, added help to the secondary, and even traded for former San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason.
There are still more moves to address depth across the roster, and the draft is still a month away. But the Vikings are a more complete team on paper than they were at the end of the 2024 season.
PFF released their post-free agency power rankings this week. The Vikings are ranked 7th, which is 4th in the NFC. Author Mason Cameron explained the ranking:
Losing a starting quarterback would typically result in a slide down the rankings, but the Vikings are still well-positioned for success. Kevin O’Connell has a proven track record of maximizing quarterback play, as evidenced by Sam Darnold’s career-best 82.0 PFF grade in 2024. Expectations will be the same for McCarthy’s development as he steps into the starting role.
It's a fair ranking, as all six teams above the Vikings have established quarterbacks. Even several of the teams immediately behind Minnesota have the benefit of established quarterbacks.
This feels like a conservative ranking, assuming J.J. McCarthy isn't a trainwreck in his first season as a starter. If McCarthy can play anything like Darnold did in 2024, the Vikings could be a force this year.
