Ex-Hab, Canadian Olympian Signs Contract Extension In Germany
ERC Ingolstadt finished first in the DEL regular season and, with the playoffs about to start, announced on Friday that an important piece of this year’s team will be returning in 2025-26, in the form of Canadian defenseman Morgan Ellis.
“As a family, we feel very comfortable in Ingolstadt,” said Ellis. “It was a huge relief that we’ve now found a kindergarten place for our son, Bowen. We would like to thank our team manager Tanja for everything she’s done for us. And a big thank you also goes to the Panther fans, many of whom have reached out and offered their help. That shows how great our fans are.”
Ellis, 32, comes from Summerside, P.E.I. and played junior hockey for the QMJHL’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, where he served as team captain and won the Kevin Lowe Trophy as the league’s best defensive defenseman. Midway through that season, he was traded to the Shawinigan Cataractes, helping that team to the Memorial Cup championship.
Ellis was chosen in the fourth round, 117th overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and played professional hockey in North America from 2012 to 2017, mostly in the AHL but also for three games with Montreal in 2015-16. The following season, he went to the training camp of the St. Louis Blues and played in the pre-season, but spent the season with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves.
Ellis has played in Europe since 2017 with Skelleftea AIK and Färjestad BK in Sweden, Kölner Haie, Eisbären Berlin and Ingolstadt in Germany, and HK Sochi and Dinamo Riga in the KHL. He won two DEL titles in his time with Berlin before returning to Ingolstadt last summer.
Ellis was also a member of the Canadian team at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where he played two games and incurred a major penalty.
This past season, Ellis had 15 points, 35 penalty minutes and was a plus-9 in 48 regular-season games.
“We are very happy that we can now plan with Morgan for the coming season,” said club sports director Tim Regan. “‘Elli’ not only consistently performs on the ice, but also leads the way as one of our leaders. He has the ability to engage everyone in and around the team and, combined with his extensive experience – including in the playoffs – will continue to be an important factor for us.”
“We have a special team together, and because many of the guys will continue to be here, the decision was all the easier,” Ellis continued. “The coaching staff is first-class and knows how to get the best out of all of us. At the same time, they know that there's more to it than just what happens on the ice. But now our full focus is on the playoffs.”
Ingolstadt, whose team also includes fellow former NHLer and 2022 Olympian Kenny Agostino, will face the Nuremberg Ice Tigers in a quarterfinal series that begins on Sunday.
