Exeter captain Sweeney out for rest of season
Exeter City captain Pierce Sweeney has been ruled out for the rest of the season as he requires surgery on a long-standing hip problem, says manager Gary Caldwell.
The 30-year-old has not played since suffering a calf injury in December.
And Caldwell now expects to have his skipper back in time for pre-season.
"He had a calf problem that he's come back from," Caldwell told the club's official X account.
"He's had a long-standing hip problem that's going to need surgery. Next week or the week after he will get surgery on that and be back fit for pre-season."
Sweeney is the Grecians' longest serving player and has made 168 appearances since joining from Swindon Town in 2021, scoring three goals.
Exeter are 16th in League One, eight points above the relegation zone with 10 games remaining, and visit Lincoln City on Saturday.
