Everton defender open to move as Liverpool and United show interest
Branthwaite Sparks Transfer Tug-of-War as Liverpool and United Circle
Defender U-turn Adds Fuel to Transfer Speculation
Sometimes in football, timing is everything. And for Jarrad Branthwaite, the moment of decision may be creeping closer. According to The Mirror, the 22-year-old Everton defender is now “considering his future” ahead of what promises to be a defining summer, setting off alarm bells across the Premier League—most notably at Liverpool and Manchester United.
It’s a development that adds intrigue to an already complex saga. United lodged two bids last summer, the second rising to £45 million plus add-ons, both of which were swiftly dismissed by Everton. Meanwhile, Liverpool—never shy when it comes to stirring Merseyside controversy—are said to have a keen eye on the situation.
Missing Out on England Adds Subplot
Branthwaite’s form under David Moyes has been undeniable. Yet, for all his composure, tactical maturity and aerial dominance, he found himself left out of Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad. Instead, 32-year-old Dan Burn got the nod.
It was a snub that may prove pivotal.
“If you’re looking at the last six or seven weeks Jarrad Branthwaite would be up there playing as well as any English centre-half in the country,” Moyes insisted.
“Go and show what you can do for the 21s… and hopefully it will get you back in.”
It’s this kind of public backing that reflects Branthwaite’s growing status—not just as a promising youngster, but as a defender ready for a bigger stage.
Contract Talks on Hold, But Not Ruled Out
Despite Branthwaite’s contract running until 2026, reports suggest he’s open to improved terms at Everton. Yet, crucially, no formal negotiations have begun. For a club still navigating financial uncertainty and preparing to bid farewell to Goodison Park, that pause could be costly.
Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Tottenham are all believed to be tracking his development, but Liverpool and United appear best positioned to strike—especially given their urgent need for defensive reinforcements.
Future Hinges on More Than Just Talent
Branthwaite isn’t just a talented centre-half; he’s a symbol of what Everton still do right. But as with many clubs fighting battles on multiple fronts—financial, managerial, and infrastructural—holding on to prized assets becomes a war of its own.
If Branthwaite’s decision is shaped by ambition, a move across Stanley Park or up the M62 may be more than just rumour.
Our View – EPL Index Analysis
For a Liverpool and Manchester United fans, this link is intriguing—if slightly uncomfortable. For United, the interest is well-documented. They see Branthwaite as a long-term partner for Lisandro Martínez, someone with composure, physicality, and Premier League experience. And at 22, he ticks all the boxes.
For Liverpool, the idea of signing an Everton defender—especially one this promising—is rarer than a calm Merseyside derby. But strip away the tribal lines, and Branthwaite fits the mould of what Arne Slot may want: progressive, confident in possession, and comfortable under pressure.
That said, there’s concern. Is this just agent noise? Is the timing—post-England snub—opportunistic? And would either club really go toe-to-toe for a player who still has things to prove?
Branthwaite is undoubtedly talented, but whether he’s ready for the weight of expectation that comes with Old Trafford or Anfield remains to be seen. He’s one to watch—but maybe not one to rush into.
