Leandro Trossard gave Mikel Arteta’s much-changed Arsenal the lead in the first half, but Iliman Ndiaye’s penalty kick in the second half was enough to grab a point.
With the draw Arsenal move on to 62 points, while Everton move on to 35.
Gunners concede the title
It was probably the case before this game but Arteta’s team selection showed Arsenal are all in on the Champions League and have given up hope of chasing Liverpool down for the title. With injuries hitting hard again, Arteta decided to rest Saka, Martinelli, Timber and Odegaard from the start. That set the tone for a lackluster display. Arsenal should have won but really, does it matter? They’re going to finish second behind Liverpool and now all of their focus is on Real Madrid in the next two midweeks. It’s all about Champions League glory for Arsenal and if they don’t suffer any more injuries, they could become champions of Europe. This game at Everton showed that the Premier League is now an afterthought for Arsenal this season. That’s a shame but it’s the reality of the situation. And it’s entirely understandable.
What’s next?
Arsenal host Real Madrid on Tuesday in the first leg of their UCL quarterfinal. Everton are away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, April 12.
