ESPN picks Colts under-the-radar free agency move
What does ESPN consider the under-the-radar free agency move for the Indianapolis Colts?
In ESPN's recent post-free agency power rankings, the beat writers for each respective team selected one under-the-radar move. For the Colts, Stephen Holder chose the team's decision to restructure Braden Smith's contract.
"The Colts lost two key members of their offensive line to free agency in center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries," Holder wrote. "So it is no small matter that they found middle ground with Smith and reduced his salary cap charge to a more manageable number."
As Holder mentions, after the Colts lost Will Fries and Ryan Kelly in free agency, finding a way to retain Smith became a more important move as it'll help provide some stability up front.
Depth at along both the interior and at tackle are very much needs now, but with Smith on the roster, the Colts likely have their starting five on the roster already.
In addition to that, by reworking Smith's deal, the Colts also created some valuable salary cap space, which they put to use with GM Chris Ballard being much more aggressive in free agency this offseason.
Originally, Smith came with a cap hit this season of $19.75 million, which was the fourth-largest on the team. But now, according to Over the Cap, his base salary has reduced from $14.75 million to just $3.96 million, and his cap hit sits at $10.4 million this season.
This is a move that won't be talked about much, but it gave the Colts added flexibility both on the offensive line and with their salary cap situation.
