Disturbed Concert’s Pyrotechnics Damage Chicago Bulls’ Championship Banners
The Chicago Bulls were forced to remove all six of the NBA team’s championship banners — captured during Michael Jordan’s Nineties reign — after they were inadvertently damaged by pyrotechnics during Disturbed’s concert at Chicago’s United Center.
The United Center confirmed Friday that the banners each suffered “minor damage” from the pyrotechnics, which were positioned on the stage under the banners and gave off enough heat to warp them, the Chicago Tribune reported.
“United Center is currently working with the Bulls to explore options to repair these banners,” an arena spokesperson said Friday in a statement. “While the banners will not be in place for the remainder of this season, we do anticipate them being back in place next season.”
Fan video from the concert posted on social media showed the banners being blown by the flames onstage.
Disturbed’s concert at the Chicago arena took place last Saturday; the banners were removed ahead of the Bulls’ Monday night home game versus the Indiana Pacers, but neither the team nor the arena mentioned the cause of their removal until Friday.
The championship banners for the Chicago Blackhawks, the arena’s other sports tenant, escaped unscathed, as did the banners for retired numbers and divisional/conference championships for both the NBA and NHL franchises.
Disturbed, which hails from the Windy City, have not yet commented on the incident.
