Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres turned on an inside pitch and pulled a home run to left field in the third inning of Friday's 8-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, just the second game in the 2025 season.
It came with a cost.
Torres suffered an injury.
The Tigers placed Torres on the 10-day injured list Monday, retroactive to Saturday, with a left oblique strain. To replace him, the Tigers called up Justyn-Henry Malloy from Triple-A Toledo.
The roster moves were made before Monday's opener of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Without Torres, the Tigers could play Colt Keith at second base, Spencer Torkelson at first base and Malloy at designated hitter, with Kerry Carpenter in right field.
Torres had been experiencing rib discomfort for several days before it worsened during his home-run swing in Friday's game.
The Tigers now have five notable players on the injured list: Torres (left oblique strain), center fielder Parker Meadows (right upper arm nerve discomfort), outfielder/third baseman Matt Vierling (right rotator cuff muscle strain), outfielder Wenceel Pérez (lumbar spine inflammation) and right-hander Alex Cobb (right hip inflammation).
Both Torres and Cobb were signed to one-year, $15 million contracts by the Tigers in the 2024-25 offseason.
