Despite incredible shank, Justin Rose in contention at Valero Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO — Even at the ripe age of 44, Justin Rose is still a top-40 player in the world and has a pair of top-10 finishes under his belt this season on the PGA Tour.

But a reminder of how difficult this crazy game of golf is, captured perfectly by the omnipresent TV cameras, took place during the opening round of the Valero Texas Open.

On the fourth hole at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course, a par 4, Rose hit a drive right in the center cut of the fairway and had just over 200 yards home. What he did next was reminiscent of a scene that plays out on every public golf course in America — the 11-time PGA Tour winner shanked one wildly into the trees.

The video angle was perfect, too.

Rose, who is playing the opening two rounds with Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay, was 3 under at the time, and wound up taking a double-bogey on the hole. Still, he rebounded with a birdie on No. 6 (he started on the back nine) and was still in good position.
