Derek Stingley Jr. thanks father, Derek Sr., for his impact ahead of massive extension
Derek Stingley Jr. wouldn't have become the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL without his father, Derek Sr.
No, really, it was the senior Stingley who first found out that the Houston Texans were giving him a three-year, $90 million extension that would give him a new salary of $30 million annually starting in 2027.
"When I found out, I was working out with my pops," Stingley recollected Wednesday during his press conference. "Then halfway through workout he was like, 'Oh dude, guess what,' and I was like, 'What?', and then he was like, 'The deal is done'. Then I was like 'What? That's crazy.' I was just saying that it was crazy."
The Texans were wise to get the deal done now after Stingley's first All-Pro season. After missing time in both 2022 and 2023, the former No. 3 overall pick started 17 games and impressed, matching his career high in interceptions with five interceptions and ranking second overall in pass deflections with 18.
Derek Stingley Jr.’s answer on his reaction to hearing about his new deal is exactly how you’d expect:

His game-breaking two interceptions and five deflections in Houston’s playoff win over the Los Angeles Chargers made him a superstar, but it was Derek Sr.'s training from his time as a child that prepared him for what's in store.
“Without my dad, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now,” Stingley said. “I wouldn’t even be who I am without him with everything.”
There's plenty of people to thank, according to Stingley. Because of their impact on his life, he'll change his future for the good.
“A lot of people don't have the support around me that I have,” Stingley said. “That's a blessing. I'll take that. Then when I think about grandkids and all that, they'll be able to say what I've done. So I'm proud of that, I am trying to do everything that my support system has done for me.”
Derek Stingley Jr. really only cares about one thing:

“I mean it’s cool. The market is different now, but that doesn’t really have anything to do with me really but.. I’m just here to play football.”

But it all started with pops. Because of his drive, everything esle became possible.
" I wouldn't be me," Stingley said of his father's impact.
