Commissioners approve Lee County Athletic Park fees
The Lee County commissioners approved a fee schedule for field rentals at the Lee County Athletic Park, which is scheduled to open in late August.
“It does seem like we might be going in a hole,” Commissioner Robert Reives said.
Joseph Keel, parks and recreation director, presented the schedule to the county board at the Monday night meeting.
The fees are variable depending if they are grass or synthetic fields and the length of time needed.
“Our goal in Lee County is to be as flexible and opportunistic as possible,” Keel said.
Rental rates will vary with the length of time a field is needed — long-term use, by the month, by the hour or for practice.
For example, fees for synthetic multipurpose fields are $60 per hour while the cost for a grass multipurpose baseball and softball fields are $30 per hour.
For a grass multipurpose field with a long-term rental, the cost is $6,000 per month, Keel said.
“I can tell you we’re looking at operational costs just south of $600,000. And with these fees in place, we’re looking at expecting to bring in around $100,000.
“So we’re looking at 18% cost recovery where we should be around 20 to 25%, so even with these fees, we’re not where we need to be, but we had to start somewhere,” Keel said.
The goal was to keep the rates affordable, Commissioner Andre Knecht said. He asked if there was any feedback from the Sanford Area Soccer League.
Keel said he and his staff met with SASL leaders and got no feedback other than to let them know when the park is open.
The board also agreed to hiring two employees — park operations and maintenance supervisors at a cost of up to $41,329. The positions are to be filled immediately.
Their salaries will be funded through the end of the month from investment earnings from the project. The salaries will be for the 2025-26 fiscal year, effective July 1.
