Colts' Shane Steichen weighs in on Daniel Jones addition at QB

For the first time since the Indianapolis Colts signed Daniel Jones in free agency, head coach Shane Steichen was available to answer questions about the quarterback.

So, what about Jones and his game stands out to Steichen?

"He’s had production,” Steichen said via the Indy Star at the NFL league meetings. “Won a playoff game, career 64% completion percentage, high football IQ. Everyone I’ve talked to in the vetting process had nothing but great things to say. Phenomenal worker, loves the game.”

As GM Chris Ballard mentioned recently, Steichen also acknowledged that Jones' skill set should fit well within the Colts' offense.

Jones joins the Colts with 69 career NFL starts under his belt over six seasons. As Steichen mentions, Jones has been a fairly efficient passer in his career, although between the 2023 and 2024 seasons, generating chunk plays has been an issue, with Jones averaging just 5.9 yards per pass attempt during that span. He also threw more interceptions as well.

Jones will be competing with Anthony Richardson for the starting role. Steichen confirmed that at the start of OTAs, the two quarterbacks will split the starting reps.

The hope is that the competition will elevate the level of play of the entire quarterback room. That not only goes for Richardson, who did respond well last season after being benched, but also for Jones.

Ultimatley, the player who is the most consistent over the course of the summer will win the job.

"We’re just looking for consistency on a daily basis,” Steichen said. “I mean, you look around the league, the teams that were in the playoffs, the quarterback play was consistent.”
