Colts may not be done adding to quarterback position

The Indianapolis Colts may not be done adding to the quarterback position just yet.

At the NFL league meetings on Monday, GM Chris Ballard left the door open to making another addition at that position in the NFL draft.

“If you think there’s somebody organizationally that you believe in, at any point, I think you pull the trigger,” Ballard said via the Indy Star.

The Colts, of course, have Anthony Richardson, and they signed Daniel Jones in free agency to compete with him. The only other quarterback on the roster beyond those two is Jason Bean.

In Shane Steichen's first two seasons as head coach, the Colts have kept a third quarterback on the 53-man roster--Sam Ehlinger. However, Ehlinger, a free agent, won't be returning and has signed with a new team.

If Ballard wants to stay true to what he said following the 2024 season, which is that he wants to infuse this roster with competition, then that sentiment should apply to the third quarterback spot as well, instead of assuming that Bean, a 2024 undrafted rookie, can fill that role.

But beyond looking through the narrow scope of only the 2025 season, generally speaking, routinely investing in developmental players at the game's most important position certainly isn't a bad idea. This becomes particularly true when there are unknowns already at the quarterback position.

While the Colts anticipate the competition for the starting quarterback job to elevate the play of that entire room, it's certainly not a given that either Richardson or Jones will turn their careers around either. A mid-round selection in this year's draft doesn't provide that certainty either, but that prospect could provide the team with another option down the road if needed.

With the Colts having to win now and there still being several needs to address, I wouldn't anticipate an early round pick on a quarterback, but once we get to Day 3, it does seem possible.
