Colts' free agent quarterback signs with AFC team

Indianapolis Colts free agent quarterback Joe Flacco is heading back to the Cleveland Browns for the 2025 season.

According to Adam Schefter, the Browns are signing Flacco to a one-year, $4 million deal that could be worth as much as $13 million with incentives.

Before joining the Colts for the 2024 season, Flacco won the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award in 2023 while with the Browns.

Schefter added that Flacco also spoke with Minnesota and Pittsburgh this offseason. This will be his 18th NFL season.

Flacco would appear in seven games last season with the Colts, including six as a starter. Two of those starts came in Weeks 9 and 10 when the team benched Anthony Richardson. Flacco's other appearances came while Richardson was dealing with injuries.

Overall, Flacco's numbers were fine. He provided some stability to the passing game, particularly on the short and intermediate routes, by completing 65% of his passes. He also averaged 7.1 yards per attempt with 12 touchdowns to seven interceptions, according to PFF.

However, specifically during that two-game stretch when Richardson was benched, points were hard to come by for the Flacco-led offense.

Against Minnesota in Week 9, the offense mustered just six points, while against Buffalo, the Colts were able to put up 20 total points, but seven came on a touchdown with two seconds left in the game when the score was 30-13.

The Colts signed Flacco last offseason to specifically be the backup behind Richardson. This offseason, GM Chris Ballard is taking a much different approach with Daniel Jones competing with Richardson for the starting job.
