COLLEGE SPORTS: Six OC Wrangler coaches receive the NJCAA Coaches Legacy Award
Mar. 19—The National Junior College Athletic Association has announced the Coaches Legacy Award presented by Nufabrx, which recognizes and celebrates the all-time winningest coaches in NJCAA history.
This is the first time since 1938 that the NJCAA will recognize the achievements and proud legacy of the coaches at one time.
Odessa College has placed six (6) current or past coaches on the Legacy list, published by the NJCAA. This prestigious list includes the following Wrangler Coaches:
Rick Zimmerman was the Odessa College baseball coach from 1990 until 2004. Coach Zimmerman led the Wranglers to the NJCAA National Baseball tournament in 1995 and made the Legacy list because he has over 1000 NJCAA baseball victories.
Paul Chavez was the Odessa College golf coach from 1996 until 2023. Coach Chavez led the Wranglers to the NJCAA National Tournament in every season he was the golf coach at Odessa College. The Wranglers won national titles in 2004, 2005 and 2017 and was national runner-up six times. Coach Chavez is on the Legacy list because of his achievement winning three or more national titles.
Chris Beene is the current Head Cross Country and Track and Field coach at Odessa College. Beene previously led South Plains College to national titles in five different sports including men's half-marathon, men's indoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field. In each of the listed categories, Coach Beene led his team to three or more national titles to appear on the NJCAA Legacy list.
Keith Blackwill is the current associate Head Cross Country and Track and Field coach at Odessa College. Blackwill previously led New Mexico Junior College to three or more national titles in women's indoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field. Three national titles in the two disciplines listed placed Coach Blackwill on the Legacy list for the NJCAA.
James Segrest was the Odessa College cross country and track and field coach at Odessa College from 1973 until 1988, and was the Athletic Director at OC from 1988 until 1995. Segrest won eleven national track and field titles at Odessa College, five indoor men's titles and six team titles in men's outdoor track and field. The eleven titles were achieved in consecutive years from 1981 until 1986. Coach Segrest is in multiple Hall of Fames and the newly renovated track facility at OC is named in his honor.
Virginia Brown was the Odessa College tennis coach from 1963 until 1980. During her tenure at Odessa College, Coach Brown won seven men's titles and three women's NJCAA national titles. Interestingly, from 1973 until 1980, Coach Brown was the tennis coach at both Odessa College and UTPB.
