College roundup: Bottrill lifts Clarkson to first game win in ECAC men's hockey quarterfinals
Mar. 15—POTSDAM — Ryan Bottrill's second goal of the third period, a tip-in with 27.6 seconds remaining in regulation, sent the Clarkson University men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Harvard in the first game of the ECAC quarterfinal series Friday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam.
The Golden Knights (22-10-3) can clinch a spot in the ECAC Tournament semifinals in Lake Placid with a victory at 4 p.m. Saturday against Harvard at Cheel. A Harvard victory sets up a decisive Game 3 on Sunday.
Clarkson scored all three of its goals in the final period. Bottrill's score on a power play 1:12 into the third period tied a game that had been 1-0 Harvard since midway through the first period.
Harvard (12-16-3) went back ahead at 6:02 of the third after Clarkson was called for a tripping penalty. Ian Moore's shot through traffic found the Golden Knights goal for a 2-1 Crimson lead.
But Clarkson scored 42 minutes later as Ayrton Martino sent a pass to Ellis Rickwood, who shot on Harvard goalie Aku Koskenvuo, who stopped the shot. But the rebound came back to Rickwood, who connected this time at 6:44 to tie the game.
Ethan Langenegger made 15 saves for Clarkson. Koskenvuo stopped 25 shots for Harvard, as Clarkson held a 28-17 lead in shots on goal.
Clarkson finished the game with a 28-17 lead in shots on goal and a 60-41 edge in total shots. Both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play. Langenegger made 15 stops for the Knights and Koskenvuo had 25 saves for Harvard.
BASEBALL
CLARKSON SPLITS PAIR
Cam Jerrett registered four hits as Clarkson split a pair of games against different opponents in Auburndale, Fla.
Clarkson first defeated Ohio Wesleyan 8-5, then suffered its first loss of the season, 9-2, to UMass-Dartmouth.
In the first game against Ohio Wesleyan (4-6), Jerrett went 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in. Christopher Griggs doubled, singled and drove in a run. CJ Cartier and Seth Albert each added two hits and an RBI, and Joe Figliolino doubled.
In the second game, Scott Cromack hit a three-run triple to close a six-run ninth inning as UMass-Dartmouth (4-5) broke open a close game for the win. Mat Tempone and Coope Wixon also drove in runs in the ninth. Cartier supplied a double and a single for Clarkson (4-1).
MEN'S LACROSSE
WASHINGTON & LEE 12, ST. LAWRENCE 10
James Haley scored three of the Generals' six goals in the second quarter to spark Washington & Lee over St. Lawrence in a nonleague game in Owings Mills, Md.
Haley finished with four goals overall and two assists for the Generals (3-2). Hillis Burns also scored four goals.
Daniel Mahoney supplied two goals and three assists for the Saints (3-2). Jamie Rosenzweig delivered two goals and two assists, and Nate Stevens finished with two goals and an assist.
Saints goalie Michael Marinello saved 14 shots. Nick De Cain made 11 saves for Washington & Lee.
TRACK & FIELD
LYNDAKER REACHES FINAL
Canton's Nick Lyndaker advanced to the finals of the mile run in the NCAA Division III indoor championships in Rochester.
Lyndaker completed the course in 4 minutes, 13.17 seconds to claim the second automatic qualifying position in his heat.
Lyndaker is fourth overall for Saturday's final, scheduled for 4 p.m. at Nazareth University.
Lyndaker is also seeded 18th in the 3,000-meter races that is slated for 5:40 p.m. Saturday.
SOFTBALL
SUNY POTSDAM SPLITS
Hammond's Kelsey Bennett went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs in the Bears' first-game victory over Elm's College in a two-game split on the final day of SUNY Potsdam's spring trip in Naples, Fla.
SUNY Potsdam (4-3) beat Elm's 10-2, then lost to Geneva College 9-1.
Kaylee LaForest drove in four runs for the Bears in the first game. Kiara Lovejoy went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Lexie Cottrell pitched the win, striking out four and allowing six hits in six innings.
In the second game, Kyra Wilcox went 4-for-4 for Geneva (7-1). Molly Shelley and Lexi Zanic each drove in two runs on two hits. Kaylee Dobransky supplied two of Potsdam's three hits, including a double.
SUNY CANTON FALLS TWICE
Sarah Balcom went 4-for-4 in the second game and had five hits over the two games, but the Kangaroos lost both contests on their final day of the Myrtle Beach, S.C., trip.
SUNY Canton (0-8) lost to Penn State-Altoona 10-3 in the first game and 16-8 to Franciscan.
Allison Beeman hit a two-run single in a five-run first inning for Penn State-Altoona in the first game. Elizabeth Maxwell knocked in five runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly for Franciscan in the second game. Maggi Yandoh was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Roos.
